The Virginia Commission For Historical Statues recently recommended that a statue of Civil Rights heroine Barbara Johns be placed in Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol to replace the statue of Robert E. Lee.
This session is proposed to introduce VAASL conference participants to a broader understanding of the courageous act of Barbara Johns, a 16 year old student, in leading
the 1951 student strike for better educational facilities at segregated, overcrowded, Robert R. Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia.  The discussion session will be based on the book A Little Child Shall Lead Them: A  Documentary Account of the Struggle for School Desegregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia (Carter G. Woodson Series, University or Virginia Press, 2019) which was
compiled and edited by presenter, Brian Grogan, and his co-editor, Brian Daugherity, professor of history at VCU.
