Inspiring the Next Generation of Readers: Why Reading Aloud Matters

As librarians, we'll jump through hoops and bend over backwards to encourage kids to read, but possibly the fastest way to build an enthusiastic reader is to share the joys of stories by reading aloud to them. I will share some of the science supporting the importance of reading aloud to children even after they can read independently, some suggestions and samples for getting teachers reading aloud in their classrooms, and practical tips and tricks for keeping even the wiggliest of little ones hanging on every word and for building an audience that can't wait to get to the library for story time. While we're at it, we'll bust the middle school myth. Got middle schoolers who don't want you to read to them? Here's a secret: they do want you to read to them...they just don't want anyone to know it!
